Pinelands Recovery Center of Medford - Heroin Withdrawal

Acceptance and Commitment

Acceptance and commitment stem from cognitive behavioral therapy and encourages the individual to recognize their negative thoughts and emotions and accept them for what they are.

Instead of feeling guilty about negative thoughts, acceptance and commitment therapy takes the realistic approach that unwanted thoughts are going to occur, and the individual can become stronger when they realize that it is okay to accept these thoughts.  It is also important to note that individuals are encouraged to accept these thoughts but not to act on these thoughts. In other words, they must also learn to harvest healthy behaviors.
